Here, you are looking at the Subaru OEM ThreeBond 1217H Engine RTV Silicone. This sealant is used for Valve covers, timing chain cover, oil pan, and similar applications. This is the mechanics' choice for rapid high-quality assembly of engine peripheral components.

This RTV is specifically designed for the rapid repair and assembly of engine components.

Don't use anything else

I mean it's in the service manual. Reassembled engine recently, minus the shortblock, and only needed one tube. I was pretty liberal with the sealant on certain areas but there was still some left over. You do need a caulk gun but I found it easier to apply.
